Make Fisherfolks Move Forward

On February 10 in Olango Island, over 100 coastal fishers received motorized pump boats through the microfinance program of Impact Circle Japan. Almost a year after being devastated by Typhoon Odette, Filipino fishermen and their families on this island community can now return to the seas for livelihood. Access to finance have long been a challenge for underserved segments in society. This opportunity to have "boats for less" allows for a sustainable scheme to own a new fishing boat without downpayment and collateral. Development programs will also raise awareness, provide training and explore other sources of income. This is another step towards supporting and empowering local fishers as stewards of the island's wildlife and marine sanctuary.
